Last 27 November 2019, the Mexico City Government, through the Ministry of the Environment (SEDEMA), signed the “Agreement for the elimination of plastic bags and sole use plastics” (herein after “the Agreement”), with various representatives of self-service shops and shopping centres.

The key purpose of the Agreement is to:

  • Prompt a joint effort in the development of innovative strategies that may allow to meet the needs of the society.

  • Conduct awareness and education campaigns to allow all citizens in Mexico City to get involved and contribute in complying with the goal of taking the city to a new Cero Garbage condition.

Based on the above, the representatives of the self-service shops and shopping centres that signed the Agreement have acquired the commitment to distribute, free of charge, fabric bags or bags manufactured with any other sustainable material, to people visiting their premises in Mexico City during the month of January 2020.

Among the companies which are part to the Agreement we find Carso Group, Bimbo Group, Central America Walmart Group, Delta Shopping Centre, Las Antenas Shopping Centre, Polanco Pavilion Shopping Centre, Insurgentes Plaza Shopping Centre, Tezontle Park Shopping Centre, among others.

To this effect, the companies which are part of the Agreement, as well as the commercial establishments located within any of the shopping centres that are part of the Agreement, will have to distribute their products, as of 1 January 2020, in bags manufactured with sustainable material.

The lawyers at the Environmental Law, National Waters and Climate Change Practise of the Firm will be pleased to provide any additional information on the topic.
